Mahatma Gandhi’s views on machinery and technology often spark debate among scholars and economists. Was he a rigid opponent of all machines, longing for some pre-industrial utopia? The answer is far more nuanced. Gandhi developed a thoughtful framework for evaluating technology-one that placed human welfare, employment, and moral purpose at the center of economic decisions. His concept of a machine wasn’t about rejecting progress but about ensuring that technological advancement served humanity rather than enslaved it.

The essence of a Gandhian machine
Gandhi made a clear distinction between machines and tools. For him, a tool was something flexible, controlled entirely by the user, and adaptable to individual needs. A machine, by contrast, performed automatic, specialized functions that often reduced the worker to a mere attendant. The spinning wheel, for instance, was a tool-the user determined the speed, tension, and quality of yarn produced. A power loom in a textile mill was a machine-the worker simply fed it and monitored its operation.
Gandhi was emphatic about his position: “My answer is emphatically, ‘No’” when asked if he opposed all machinery. He welcomed simple tools and instruments that saved individual labor and lightened the burden of cottage workers. His objection was specifically to the uncritical embrace of labor-saving machinery that displaced workers without providing alternative employment.
For Gandhi, acceptable machinery had to meet three essential criteria. First, it had to ease drudgery without eliminating meaningful work. Second, it had to be accessible to ordinary people in their homes and villages. Third, it had to generate income and employment for the poor rather than concentrating wealth in the hands of a few factory owners.
The Singer Sewing Machine example
Gandhi often cited the Singer Sewing Machine as an example of acceptable technology. He appreciated the story behind its invention-a man who watched his wife labor over tedious hand-sewing and created a device to ease her burden out of love. The sewing machine saved labor not just for one person but for everyone who could afford one. It could be operated in homes, controlled by the user, and didn’t require workers to leave their villages for factories. However, Gandhi added an important caveat: the factories producing such beneficial machines should be nationalized or state-controlled, operating for the benefit of humanity rather than private profit.
The spinning wheel: a symbol and a solution
The charkha (spinning wheel) became the most powerful symbol of Gandhi’s economic philosophy. But it was far more than a romantic symbol-it was a practical strategy for addressing India’s rural unemployment and poverty. Gandhi championed the spinning wheel for several interconnected reasons that went beyond nostalgia for the past.
The charkha served three primary objectives in Gandhi’s freedom movement: dismissal of British textiles in favor of locally spun khadi, creation of financial liberty for every citizen, and establishment of a method of non-violent protest. When India’s villages were flooded with cheap Manchester cloth, it wasn’t just a commercial transaction-it was economic colonization that destroyed indigenous livelihoods.
Fighting famine through the wheel
Gandhi argued that the spinning wheel could fight famine by providing supplementary income to agricultural workers during the four months of the year when farming offered no work. Spinning formed the “sun” in the “solar system” of Gandhi’s constructive program. Almost every person, regardless of age, social class, or gender, could participate in spinning or elsewhere in the cloth production chain. This wasn’t merely symbolic-it gave employment to millions and produced a basic necessity.
The wheel also addressed wealth distribution. When cloth was produced in village homes, the income stayed in the village. When it was manufactured in urban mills, profits accumulated in the hands of factory owners while villages became suppliers of cheap labor and raw materials. Gandhi saw this as a fundamental moral problem, not just an economic one.
Beyond romantic revival
The charkha represented self-sufficiency, dignity, and empowerment. Gandhi incorporated daily spinning into the routine of his followers, believing it would unite the nation and bridge the gap between rural and urban communities. The khadi cloth produced using the charkha became a powerful emblem of the independence movement-wearing it was seen as an act of defiance against colonial economic exploitation.
Gandhi’s promotion of the charkha was not an attempt to freeze India in the past. He wanted villages to become self-sufficient manufacturing centers, not merely suppliers of raw materials to distant factories. This was a vision of decentralized development where technology served local needs rather than global markets.
Machinery with a moral purpose
At the heart of Gandhi’s economic thought was the belief that material advances must be judged by their moral and spiritual effects on humanity. He wasn’t conducting a cost-benefit analysis in purely economic terms-he was asking whether technological change made people more human or less so.
Gandhi’s critique of the “craze” for machinery was pointed: “Men go on ‘saving labour’, till thousands are without work and thrown on the open streets to die of starvation.” He wanted to save time and labor not for a fraction of mankind but for all. He wanted the concentration of wealth not in the hands of few but in the hands of all.
Man for machine or machine for man?
Gandhi believed that the supreme consideration must always be human welfare. The machine should not tend to atrophy human limbs or reduce workers to button-pushers who never connect with the products of their labor. When work becomes mechanical and repetitive, he argued, it loses its connection to human purpose and dignity.
Technology had the potential to replace human creativity, reduce personal agency, and increase inequality, according to Gandhi’s analysis. As industries grew, so did the disparity between rich and poor, with wealth becoming concentrated in the hands of those who controlled the machines. This wasn’t inevitable-it was a choice societies made about how to organize production.
The spiritual dimension
Gandhi connected economic arrangements to spiritual well-being in ways that modern economists rarely consider. He argued that meaningful work was essential for human flourishing. The village weaver who created unique textiles reflecting personal skill and creativity was engaged in something fundamentally different from the factory worker feeding identical materials into a machine. One nourished the soul; the other merely filled the belly.
This perspective led Gandhi to reject the idea that maximum production was always desirable. Civilization, in the real sense, consisted not in the multiplication but in the deliberate and voluntary reduction of wants. This alone, he argued, promotes real happiness and contentment while increasing the capacity for service to others.
Acceptable inventions: electricity and railways
Gandhi’s position on large-scale technologies like railways and electricity was complex. He was willing to accept them as what he called “necessary evils”-technologies that, despite their problems, had become embedded in modern life in ways that couldn’t easily be reversed.
In his influential book Hind Swaraj, Gandhi offered a sharp critique of railways. He argued that railways spread disease, enabled famines by making it easier to transport grain to distant markets, and helped consolidate British control over India. Railways, he suggested, facilitated evil purposes more easily than good ones because evil has wings while good travels slowly.
The paradox of Gandhi and railways
Despite these criticisms, Gandhi relied heavily on the railways throughout his political career. He traveled the length and breadth of India by train, deliberately choosing third-class compartments to understand how ordinary Indians lived. His mentor Gopal Krishna Gokhale had advised him to “discover the authentic India,” and trains became his vehicle for doing so.
This apparent contradiction actually reveals the nuance in Gandhi’s thinking. He wasn’t arguing that railways should be dismantled-he was arguing that they shouldn’t be glorified as proof of civilizational progress. Railways were tools that could serve good or ill purposes depending on who controlled them and how they were used.
Centralized industries under state control
Gandhi proposed that certain large-scale technologies and industries should be state-owned to prevent exploitation. When asked about electricity, he responded that if villages could have electricity in every home, he wouldn’t object to villagers using electric-powered tools. But the power infrastructure would need to be owned by village communities or the state rather than private interests seeking profit.
The key principle was that centralized industries should exist to serve villages, not to supplant them. Heavy machinery would produce simple tools needed for millions of cottage production units. The relationship between large industry and village economy should be complementary, not competitive.
The continuing relevance of Gandhi’s framework
Gandhi’s concept of the machine offers more than historical interest. As automation, artificial intelligence, and digital technologies transform economies worldwide, his central questions remain urgent: Who benefits from technological change? What happens to workers displaced by machines? How do we preserve meaningful work and human dignity in an age of increasing automation?
Gandhi would likely ask the same questions about contemporary technologies that he asked about textile mills: Does this technology serve all of humanity or only a fraction? Does it create dependency on centralized systems or empower local communities? Does it add to human dignity or diminish it?
His framework suggests that technology policy cannot be separated from broader questions about the kind of society we want to build. Maximum production efficiency is not the only value worth pursuing. Employment, community resilience, environmental sustainability, and human flourishing must also enter the calculation.
